The Bloomers

Amethyst was born in Durham, NC. As the eldest of many siblings, she always knew she wanted to be teacher of young minds. Nothing touches her more deeply than watching children grow and learn. Seeing the wonder in their eyes when they encounter something new gives her such joy. She believes the benefits of nature are immeasurable as teacher and as a person. She happiest hiking, jumping in puddles, or chasing bugs with her little friends. On the weekends, you can find her enjoying the outdoors with her husband, two daughters, and two dogs. She believes children have so much to offer and is grateful to come to school each day to travel on this journey with them.

Joy has a B.A. in Education  from North Carolina Central University.  She has worked many years with children from birth to kindergarten as a nanny and a teacher.  She enjoys watching the children in her class grow and learn....they change so much every day.  Joy spends her free time with her husband and daughters, Olivia and Pennny, doing family art projects.  She also enjoys reading and playing board games.  Here at TLS Duke she plans and conducts art activities with small groups of infants and toddlers.  Take a look at the displays with documentation in the central area of the infant/toddler building to see some samples.

Tara is originally from New England and lives in Durham. She graduated from San Francisco State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies, which is a program that prepares students to become educators. Tara’s love for children inspired her studies in Early Childhood Education. She has worked as a teacher’s aid and substitute teacher for children ranging from the preschool to middle school level. She has always been enthusiastic about arts and crafts and today enjoys using art as an educational tool. In her spare time Tara likes to hike in wilderness areas, create art, listen to music, and babysit.

Damon has loved working with preschool-aged kids for quite a long time, starting as a volunteer when he was a teen. After graduating with a B.A. in Intercultural Studies, and before he and his wife Jessica moved to Durham, he was a bilingual educator in northern Illinois. Before working as a Spanish literacy tutor for Kindergartners, 1st-, and 2nd-graders at a public school, he was an assistant teacher in a bilingual preschool classroom, where he learned from a phenomenal lead teacher and spent lots of time "curating" art and facilitating outdoor play. Damon has been incredibly refreshed to work at the Little School after a short while in public education and is being enriched in conscious discipline, the Reggio approach, and even further in the value of natural play. Damon and his wife love to read, spend time outdoors, and cook. Damon is excited to attend Duke Divinity School in the fall.
